» Back to listing OHSAS 18001 to be transformed to an ISO Standard

6th September 2013

The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has approved the creation of a new project committee to develop an International Standard for occupational health and safety (OH&S).

BS OHSAS 18001 is the British Standard for occupational health and safety management systems, and provides the basis for managing health and safety in the workplace. It is the world’s most recognised occupational health and safety management systems standard; however, the future ISO standard will provide, for the first time, a truly international framework for OH&S best practice.

The new standard will provide government agencies, industry, and stakeholders with effective, usable guidance for improving worker safety and reducing work-related accidents, injuries and diseases in countries around the world.

The ISO project committee’s first meeting is expected to be held on 21st – 25th October 2013 in London. The committee’s job will be to develop the standard to conform to the ISO management system structure used by ISO 14001 and ISO 9001.

The new standard is expected to be released in late 2016 or early 2017, and will replace OSHAS 18001.

Peak HSE can provide a full support service both to attain and maintain 18001 accreditaion. We aco also offer system integration for 9001/ 14001/ 18001. For further information please contact john.herbert@peakhse.co.uk
